You can change a child’s life for as little as $85 a year
Greetings, Sponsors of Mubaku Bright Future Nursery and Primary School!
A lot has happened since our last Mubaku Educational Foundation newsletter. The summer term has ended, and the school is on its month-long break.
School Status
At the beginning of Term 2, the school had a total enrolment of 265 pupils distributed as follows
| Class | Number of Pupils |
| Baby Class | 36 |
| Middle Class (Pre-K in the US) | 27 |
| Top Class (Kindergarten in The US) | 14 |
| Primary One | 16 |
| Primary two | 17 |
| Primary Three | 23 |
| Primary Four | 36 |
| Primary Five | 46 |
| Primary Six | 29 |
| Primary Seven | 21 |
| Total | 265 |
This year, the 21 Primary Seven students will be taking the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE). All students recently completed their Mock Examinations and achieved passing grades. We are delighted by the encouraging performance. Currently, we have pledges to sponsor 12 of the 21 students to attend secondary boarding school at $460 per year.
For the summer term, the school ran an experiment to see whether providing day students with breakfast and dinner, in addition to the lunch they already receive, would help. The results exceeded our expectations: daily attendance increased, and we achieved the lowest dropout rate in our history, with 248 students completing the school year. Providing meals not only addresses nutritional needs but also helps keep children in school.
We had the highest number of sponsorships this term – 153 – which resulted in our highest attendance numbers. In the past three weeks, we have sent out 65 renewal notices to sponsors whose funds have run out, and half have already responded. We have 42 Day Student sponsorships at $85 a year, 92 Dorm sponsorships at $185 a year, and 19 Boarding school sponsorships at $460 a year.
We have run into a problem with the dorm, as the Ugandan Educational Ministries has decided to ban three-decker bunk beds from Primary School dorms. This means that the girls’ dorm is now full, as the picture below shows. The next project will be an additional dorm, which will allow us to house the nursery school children near their classrooms at the lower campus. The dorm will be the first building at the school to have an attached toilet and washroom and be wired for electricity during its construction. We’ll also install solar panels on the building to provide power. The total project cost will be $18,000 USD.
Secondary School Students
We are also happy to report that the 17 secondary school students supported by Mubaku Educational Foundation Sponsorships attended school successfully throughout the term.
A particularly exciting milestone is the progress of Kwikiriza Teopista (picture below), who is being sponsored by the school and is on track to complete her Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) in October 2026. This is a moment of great pride for the entire school community, as Teopista will be the first child from Mubaku Bright Future Nursery and Primary School to reach Senior Four and complete the UCE. Her journey shows what a young girl can achieve when she has the opportunity, support, and resources to continue her education. We are extremely proud of her and wish her every success in her final examinations.
Major Improvements at the School
Term 2 has also seen several important improvements in the school’s facilities and management.
The Solar Water Tower and Washroom Project
We are very happy to report that major parts of the solar water tower project are complete. The school and the village now have their first tap water faucet – a significant improvement over the manual pump. We plan to install three more faucets to benefit everyone in the village.
Major parts of the solar water tower project are completed and operating, providing clean water that benefits both students and the community. The upper campus restroom’s walls and floor are nearly finished, and the lower campus restroom is under construction. With $7,000 more funding, we can finish during the fall term. Completing these facilities will enhance hygiene and comfort for students and villagers alike.
We are grateful to everyone who has helped make these improvements possible.
Improvements in Teaching Staff
We have continued to strengthen the school’s teaching team by hiring more certified teachers. Three key staff members are now enrolled on a yearly payment system:
- Director of Studies (DOS)
- Science Teacher
- Head Teacher
This arrangement helps us strengthen school leadership, teaching quality, academic supervision, and the overall management of the
school. We believe investing in teachers is one of the most important investments we can make in children’s education.
Health and Well-being
During the term, Uganda faced concerns about an Ebola outbreak. Fortunately, there are currently no recorded Ebola cases in Uganda, which is very encouraging news.
On behalf of the Mubaku Educational Foundation, the Children and Staff of Mubaku Bright Futures School, and the Community of Mubaku, Uganda, thank you for your support! You are changing lives!
-Best regards,
Michael Hughes, CFO, Mubaku Educational Foundation
