December 2024
Happy Holidays! At this time of year, we celebrate the many successes of the Bright Future Nursery and Primary School students. Students are now out for Winter Break and will return to school in February.
As always, there was a grand celebration in Mubaku at the end of the term.
Thank you for your generous support, which allows the children and community of Mubaku to gain the skills and opportunities to thrive in school!
Without your support, Bright Futures Nursery and Primary School could not serve the community.
STUDENT UPDATE:
Prior to leaving for the break:
•Ten (10) students (7 girls/3 boys) took their primary leaving (Primary 7) exam. That is double the number of children than last year. That is progress! We anxiously await the results of their exams to see if they can move on to secondary school. It will cost them $400 a year each to attend boarding school. Their parents are subsistence farmers who do not have the money to send them.
The ten children who took the Primary 7 leaving exam:
• One hundred seventy-five (175) students finished their end-of-year assessments to determine movement to the next primary level.
•Thirty (30) children did not take end-of-year exams, as they had no sponsors and parents could not afford the exam fee. Often, those who can’t afford the fee, leave school just before the exams.
STUDENT FUNDING CHALLENGE
Our largest challenge continues to be recruiting sponsors for children. $65 pays for full year of school attendance for one child; $165/year pays for a child to attend school and live in the dorm, which is the safest option for female students, students living far away and for orphans.
Once students pass the Primary 7 leaving exam and qualify for secondary school, they go to live in boarding schools outside of Mubaku. The cost to attend secondary boarding school is $400/yr. Last term, five (5) students who passed their primary leaving exam were sponsored through the generosity of MEF donors. We have high hopes that all ten children who took the Primary 7 leaving exam pass, and we hope to find sponsors for every child who passes. We await the text results and greatly anticipate their success.
CELEBRATION OF SHOES:
In October, the children and some staff of Mubaku Bright Future Nursery and Primary School received new shoes and socks due to the generosity of the children of Moorpark Presbyterian Church Vacation Bible School. It is heartwarming to see the excitement of children and staff members, like the dormitory night guard, receiving new shoes and socks.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE:
Construction of the third classroom wing is underway. The foundation has been laid, and rebar has been installed to support the bricks. We currently have about one-third of the funding needed to complete this project.
The new wing will have four classrooms and a small library. Please consider donating toward the construction. You can do so directly on the website: https://mubakuschool.org/donate/ or mail a check.
MUBAKU VILLAGE TRIP IN JULY:
In July, a group of 14 supporters, including our board members, will be traveling to Mubaku Village. This is the first time we have had others join us on our journey, and we are thrilled to share this wonderful community with others. While there, we will visit the village, school, Women’s Empowerment Center, and Medical Center and converse with representatives of all stakeholders in the village. We will spend time with the students in the classrooms and work on service projects, such as painting, to upgrade the facilities. As always, we will all participate in a community celebration.
Please consider an end-of-year donation:
Please consider an end-of-year donation. All donation receipts for 2024 will be sent out by January 17th for use in preparing your taxes.
